‘Vial’: An art exhibition by Marie Connole

‘Vial’ is a captivating exhibition exploring Ireland’s Revolutionary Years in the early 20th century. Clare artist Marie Connole has created paintings, posters and animated videos over the past three years highlighting events from 1913 to 1923. This exhibition, which opened in Scariff Public Library on 15th August, displays biographical portraits and surreal watercolours developed from extensive research and a range of historical sources. Five portraits focus on the lives of diverse women in order to understand the effects of Ireland’s War of Independence in Clare. Elsewhere, watercolour paintings feature an unusual visual timeline – depicting events from the Civil War inside scientific beakers. This year, the artist is acknowledging the location of the exhibition and has developed new work centred on the Scariff Martyrs.  ‘Vial’ adopts a new approach so that contemporary audiences may learn and understand these historical events. To assist this, a YouTube video and downloadable posters entitled ‘Irrepressible Women of Clare’ are available from Clare Education Centre and Clare County Library History Week websites. An artist talk will form part of the exhibition which runs to 15th September.
